| The month of February in Tucson is "Rodeo" time. You must dress the part so Altay and I picked up some western shirts. Altay took the time to interact with some of the kids in our neighborhood ... bicycle riding, showing them dance steps, soccer of course (missed pictures on this, but ...). Tucson-Almaty Sister Cities arranged a presentation at Agua Caliente Elementary School as next on Altay's schedule. Mrs. Peggy Olson (PJ), the Arizona AYUSA Regional Director came down from Phoenix. Altay provided the kids with a talk concerning his country and answer many questions ... that continued during a recess. The longest nonmotorized parade in the US, the 79th annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros parade, came at the end of the month. Rodeo officials put the crowd at about 200,000 -- happily greeting the 188 entries (3300 participants), from marching bands to individual riders, including walkers and horse-drawn carriages. | The last event in February was the Rodeo itself. The second sequence below shows just a few of the happenings there. It was rather cool and sprinkled a bit. Unusual picture in the middle ... a rainbow -- both ends ! -- and the very last picture of the sequence ... Atay in front of some Brama Bulls ... one of them had just ran toward the fence that Altay is in front of and gave a great big "SHORT!" ... I missed the picture because I jumped as much as he did, but this was a few seconds later when I convinced him to return ... I almost didn't get the picture because Altay kept looking over his shoulder to check on where the bull was! We both took a while to settle down. What a month! |
