September 1, Returning students from Kazakhstan, part of the bolashaker program... meal and orientation for the in- progress school year

Almost all the students in the program last year have returned to continue their studies at the University of Arizona in a variety of programs. On hand this year, was an in-house faculty of tutors, headed up by TASCC members Chuck and Stacy Yungkurth and Ed Marquart, with Ken Narra, Andrew Frits and Anton. The group, Raytheon employees, offers math tutoring. TASCC Secretary Sally Gary and Chair Emeritus Jerry Gary handed out bags with information about Tucson, aromatic gifts, and an orientation manual specific to getting around the city and the campus. Members of TASCC are available for support. The orientation manual carried welcoming messages from Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, TASCC Chair Barbara Chinworth, and the Honorable Erlan Idrissov, Ambassador to the USA and Canada from Kazakhstan. The meal was catered and featured a tasty meatloaf, rice, a veggie and fruit plate. TASCC member Marilyn Civer provided juices and sodas, and friend of the committee, Patricia Holmes, helped serve the meal. The committee is grateful to Tucson Parks and Rec for its transportation, and driver, Verlin, coordinated by Chair Emeritus Jerry Gary. Students are living in quite different locations than last year, so new pickup points were established. TASCC Vice Chair Sally Allison, TASCC member Kay Fowler, and photographer and TASCC member Gary Sawyer were also present helping the success of the evening. Photos accompanying the article are Mr. Sawyer's.

The photos show the first set-up at the Wilmot Branch, throughout April, with volunteers from Pecs (Hungary) Sister Cities Committee Mexico (Obregon and Guadalajara)Sister Cities Committee, Roscommon (Ireland) Sister Cities Committee, Segovia (Spain) Sister Cities Committee, Almaty (Kazakhstan) Sister Cities Committee, and Tikkala (Greece) Sister Cities Committee on hand to talk about the sister cities programs and committees in Tucson. There will be volunteers from the committees at each branch on the third Saturday of each month. Trevan Paynter and Adriana Rendon of the Tucson Library System have been the main persons organizing for the displays. They have been working with Malena Barajas, the city liaison for Tucson Sister Cities Association.

The project has brought together these two important entities of the city of Tucson. There are two sections of the displays: 1) an enclosed display box of items representative of each city; 2) a table display of each city, featuring Tucson time and the city's time, as well as contact information, missions of the sister cities committees and activities. At Wilmot the display box is at the entrance and the table display is not far from the entrance to the main room. Look for volunteers at a special meeting room at each branch. An official reception is being planned for September 29, at Woods Branch Library." - Barbara Chinworth

Camel Lot on Sunday, January 14th. Reward.

Students from Kazakhstan singing the Kazakhstan National Anthem, with music performed by the Old Pueblo British Brass Band, at the Tucson Family Arts Festival on Sunday, January 14th.

"There have never been more accomplishments in our search for the ideal in People to People Diplomacy than those that occurred at the Family Arts Festival. Standing back and observing the line of activities, with people from Kazakhstan sharing their country's heritage and background with people from Tucson was a marvelous sight. Watching the children coloring Kazakhstan blue, people asking detailed and genuine questions about this beautiful Central Asian country and seeing items handicrafted in Kazakhstan being sold to our citizens.....all this gave me a warm feeling on a very cold day." - Jerry M.Gary, Chairman Emeritus
